What to Do If You Experience Sexual Harassment at Work

A man standing close in front of a female coworker.Workplace sexual harassment is a serious offense that should not be taken lightly. Whether a co-worker makes unwanted physical advances towards you or a supervisor threatens to withhold pay or promotion without sexual contact, you should report the harassment as soon as possible.

If you are being sexually harassed at work, make sure to do the following:

  • Tell the individual harassing you to stop. If it is safe to do so, make it clear to the harasser that their advances or offensive behavior are unacceptable and unwelcome. However, if you are in immediate physical danger, do not hesitate to call 911.
  • Report the sexual harassment to management. After you confront the harasser, report their behavior to a manager or other authority in writing. If your employer has a specific sexual harassment complaint process, follow those steps. It will help to have a witness, such as another trusted co-worker, who can attest to the inappropriate behavior. Ask your employer to give you confirmation that the complaint was received and keep a copy of that confirmation. Generally, the employer will then begin an investigation.
  • Follow your employer’s investigation. If your employer offers any help to prevent or correct the individual’s harassment, make sure to take advantage of it.

If your employer fails to stop the harassment or retaliates against you after filing your claim, you should contact one of our workplace sexual harassment attorneys. Since employers are obligated to take prompt, effective action against the harasser’s behavior, they cannot punish you for speaking out against workplace sexual harassment. In many cases, employers can be held liable for damages if the harassment is pervasive or severe. At Green Savits, LLC, our employee rights advocates will fight for your wellbeing.
